April Fool’s Day Article

Media Credit: Tyler KearnFor today’s April Fool’s Day issue of the Occidental Weekly, I wrote a parody Tyler the Tech Guy article  — “Tyler the Truck Guy”, where I review the tiny pickup trucks and vans that the grounds and utilities workers use.  The April Fool’s Issue is not put online, but if you’re around Occidental College this week, try to pick up a copy of the paper!

Note: the above image is the official Tyler the Tech Guy tiny vehicle scale. It ranges from 1 to 10, where a 1 is a rascal power scooter, and a 10 is a personal hovercraft.

Article: The New iPod Shuffle and Simplicity in Technology

This  week I wrote about simplicity in consumer technology, particularly in regards to Apple and the new iPod Shuffle, for my Tyler the Tech Guy column in The Occidental Weekly. Here’s the article lead:

Can something really be made too simple? Well, it depends on what that thing is. In the case of a midterm exam, the answer is “no.” But, in the case of tech products, it’s more of a gray area because simplicity often comes at the expense of features or convenience.

Article: Skype 4.0 and Video Calling

This week I have a new Tyler the Tech Guy article in The Occidental Weekly, the newspaper at Occidental College. It’s about the new version of Skype, Skype 4.0, and about the phenomenon of video calling.  Here’s the lead of the story:

Skype may be the greatest thing ever. Every time I use it to make a free video call to a friend who is eight time zones away, I always get the feeling that Skype has to be too good to be true.
