I hadn't heard of this site before, and it's hard for me to tell from a quick browse how legitimate the site is. The Web of Trust extension seems to think that the site is trustworthy. The opt-out feature didn't work for me in Chrome (it got hung up on the "checking status" screen), but in Internet Explorer it is giving me the option to opt out of several personalized ad companies' tracking.

I won't know whether it works until I try it and get a sense of the ads being served to me, but if it does work this seems pretty great.

I do have a question though of whether this opt out is permanent or whether it is something that you will have to redo every time you clear your cookies or restart your browser, since permanency is the justification for making opt-out a browser extension or a built-in browser feature.

The site http://www.aboutads.info/choices/ claims to let you opt-out from personalized ads by 59 currently participating firms. It lists those which already have cookie-marked your browser. Is it for real?

Hey Zak,

Tethering is possible on AT&T, but it uses Bluetooth to connect the phone to a laptop. The difference with Verizon's mobile hotspot technology (which I do think will eventually be available on the AT&T phone), is that it connects to a laptop or other device using Wifi. Rather than having to pair a device to your phone over Bluetooth, the Verizon iPhone will show up under the available wifi networks. There are two advantages to this over the Bluetooth tethering. 1) It allows you to access the internet on more than one device at a time, since up to 5 can connect simultaneously. 2) You can connect to the web on devices that don't have bluetooth (many laptops don't) and on non-laptop devices which support wifi (such as the iPad).

Thanks for the comment. Hope this info is helpful!

It's hard to argue with that. Unfortunately, it seems like the cell phone infrastructure improvements can barely keep up with regular use, let alone handle any kind of exceptional situation. I was at the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear in DC over the weekend, and with 200,000+ people in the National Mall the networks were so overloaded that no one could make a call or even send a text.

The problem arises when the people you need to reach during an emergency only have cell phones or are not home to answer their landline.

So, if you think about it, the real solution is for mobile carriers to improve their capacity and service availability to be prepared to get flooded with calls after a disaster.

I totally agree with the usefulness in netbooks.

I have been using an Asus UL30A-X5 as my laptop (and until recently, my main computer) and it's been awesome. It's not a netbook, but it's about as close as a laptop can get. Light as hell, and drivers are available in almost all major distributions of Linux. I love bringing it to meetups or even on the muni and hacking away. Power + Portability = Win.
